Came out of the office to find this on the vert top of the Celica.
At first I thought the only explanation was a pinch point in the internal mechanism caused the incisions while the top was down (mirrored incisions, etc), but I'd just gone over the top inch by inch yesterday with a treatment and this is something I would have noticed while doing so (yeah, I'm guilty of obsessing over practically every inch of my car), and the top hadn't been lowered since then due to weather.
I lowered the top slowly with the assistance of a coworker looking for something inside the top that would have made such a clean incision and found nothing.
I'm totally baffled.
By the way, white marine adhesive, high adhesive pressure tape on the inside of the top, and a library card as a scraper seems to work wonders repairing a vinyl vert top. I wish I didn't have to find that out today, but now I've got a tube of the stuff for future repairs...

This is why I just can't see myself owning a vert. It only takes one asshole with a box cutter to ruin your day, and our planet features ample supply of both of those.

I dunno why the stupidity/cruelty of strangers surprises me.
I try to live my life in such a way that I don't make enemies of anyone, or give anyone good reason to want to hurt or do me damage, so it's always a bit of a shocker to me when someone just randomly does something shitty to me.

It's the reason why I've splurged on a Miata hardtop. When the time comes, I'm going to lighten up the car and remove the entire assembly and perma-bolt the top to the windshield striker plates.

I've always felt compelled to do that to mine (god, the weight savings) but I still value being able to take the roof off for a few weekends each year.

I'm planning on having the car sit at college so the hardtop would double as better protection against the elements and protection against thieves (although I heard H/T's are commonly stolen, which is why I want to bolt mine down for good).

I've heard of hardtop theft too. I don't live in an area like that but if I did, I'd invest in a locking mechanism.

All depends where you live. I park on the street right now, worry-free.
